Garfield Mahood

Kumar Murty standing with calculation in the background behind him.

Garfield (Gar) Mahood, OC has been a leader in tobacco control advocacy since 1976. He was the head of Canada’s Non-Smokers’ Rights Association, a recipient of the international Luther Terry “Outstanding Organization” Award in 2000. This American Cancer Society prize honours global leadership in tobacco control.

Gar led campaigns for smoke-free environments, world precedent-setting tobacco advertising bans and tobacco warnings. He was invested as an Officer in the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honour system, and received a World Health Organization Gold Medal for his work.

His memoir takes the reader inside historic campaigns and offers lessons for activists working on other issues. Tobacco revelations are augmented by tales of life-threatening misadventure and moving stories of family.

I write to reveal the role that hard-hitting advocacy played in campaigns for world precedent-setting tobacco laws. Looking inside these campaigns may help other advocates working on necessary social change.
